The Key to High Hard Goals
Now that we have established our Major Transformative Purpose (MTP) we can establish what the Steven Kotler and the Flow Research Collective team calls “high hard goals” or HHGs’.
A HHG is one that is what someone might call a “reach goal” or a “push goal”. It is a goal that is hard to reach but manifests the overall Major Transformative Purpose or is a major step towards it. How does one create a HHG?
Think of the HHG as something longer term with a timeline of one to five years. The goal should be measurable, definable and binary. By binary it means that the goal is either accomplished or it isn’t. Yes or no. Go or no-go.
If your major transformative purpose is to help communities to overcome the challenges of climate change through the context of economic development perhaps one high hard goal would be to write a book on the topic. Another might be to hold a webinar within the next six months. Perhaps an HHG might be to develop an online community where assistance and support can be given to economic developers in the area of climate change.
Once you have established your HHGs’ you can begin to drill down. Knowing your High Hard Goals allows you to generate goals under level of duration. Look at each HHG and establish annual, quarterly, monthly, weekly and daily goals.
With your daily goals you can generate “clear” goals which are so detailed they border on the ridiculous. Clear goals help you know what needs to be done for each task and once established and complete begins to look like small but significant victories.
Let’s summarize the goal setting process:
- Establish Major Transformative Purpose, (MTP);
- Develop High Hard Goals, (HHG);
- Take each HHG and turn them into annual, quarterly, monthly, and daily goals;
- Take each daly goal and turn them into clear goals (ridiculously detailed).
If you follow these steps you will achieve great things, be insanely productive and lead a fulfilling life. Follow along every day and you will learn how to trigger flow, and generate a level of productivity like you have never before experienced.
